Öfferl, 35 Josefstädter Straße
The Öfferl bakery in Vienna’s 8th District reimagines the neighborhood bakery as a modern community space rooted in material honesty and spatial clarity. A key part of our design strategy is to create a unique spatial identity for each location that reflects its specific urban context. Josefstadt is a traditionally middle-class and upscale neighborhood; the design reflects this refined setting by embodying the character of a sophisticated boutique. This vision extended to the exterior, where we redesigned the building’s facade to better blend with the district’s historic elegance while signaling the transformation taking place inside.
Materiality
The material palette for the Josefstadt bakery reflects the upscale and traditional character of Vienna’s 8th district by incorporating a sophisticated boutique aesthetic centered on a deep red monochromatic color scheme. Red travertine is the primary material used in the interior, grounding the space with a sense of geological permanence and tactile warmth through its use in the service counters, seating niches, and custom-made furniture pieces. This environment is made truly immersive by finishing the walls in a dark red shade that mirrors the natural stone, creating a seamless and refined atmosphere. Visual clarity is achieved through the use of light-colored terrazzo flooring and brushed stainless steel accents, which highlight the technical, process-driven nature of the open show bakery. The design is further defined by custom-designed stainless steel light fixtures that serve as architectural guides, while a central travertine water fountain stands as a democratic design gesture, providing free access to water and reinforcing the boutique's high-end material identity.
